Present Tense: -uar verbs

In some cases, verbs ending in -uar have irregularities.
These are irregular verbs because they entail a stress shift: u at end of stem becomes accented.
This stress shift only occurs in *certain AR verbs: never occurs in ER or IR verbs!
AR
continuar to continue fortsetzen
evacuar to evacuate, empty, vacate evakuieren
evaluar to evaluate schätzen
graduar to graduate auslernen, promovieren
insinuar to insinuate andeuten
*This change does not occur in such verbs as: apaciguar & averiguar
In all forms except nosotros & vosotros the -u at the end of the stem becomes an -ú.
Drop the -ar: That's the stem !!
To see the present tense conjugated forms of these verbs, click on a pronoun below:
The nosotros & vosotros forms do not require the stem change in the present tense.
YO
ÉL
ELLA
USTED
NOSOTROS
VOSOTROS

Why add the accent?
The U is a weak vowel, and without this added accent it merges into the following vowel to become an unstressed diphthong.
The stem (verb minus AR) tells you the action.
Using the o ending says I am doing this action, and it's going on NOW.
Each verb form in Spanish matches a specific pronoun, so Spanish doesn't need to use the pronoun.
That means: each of the conjugated forms you see says ALL of the given "meaning."
The YO is understood, because of the ending.
You don't need to say YO. If you do add the YO, it usually adds emphasis, saying I dooo ...
